A Fresh Take on Yesterday
Gig Harbor was named during the U.S. Exploring Expedition commanded by Captain Charles Wilkes in 1841. During a storm, several longboats and the Captain's “gig” – a light boat reserved for a captain – sought shelter in the bay. Later, Captain Wilkes named the haven that sheltered them “Gig Harbor.”
Twenty-six years later, Sam Jerisich became one of the first white settlers in the community soon followed by immigrants of Norway, Croatia, and Sweden. Living side by side with the Native American people, the immigrants built flourishing seaside industries like commercial fishing and boat building, creating a rich, vibrant lifestyle centered around the sparkling waters that continues today.
